U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham declared that India requested a cut in tariffs. He also mentioned that India’s Ambassador to the U.S, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, talked to him about India reducing its intake of Russian oil. To Graham, Kwatra asked him to deliver it to former President Donald Trump in order to get a 25 percent tariff cut. Graham told the press that the talk took place last month about Russian oil purchases.
Graham’s Statement
Graham said, “Last month, I went to the Indian Ambassador’s house. He tried to tell me that they had reduced their oil purchases from Russia. He asked me to tell Trump about the tariff reduction.” Former President Trump was present when Graham made these remarks to reporters.Earlier, Graham had warned the possibility of imposing a “500 percent tax” on imports from countries that are buying oil from Russia.
Context of Trump’s Warning
These comments come after Trump had warned of possible tariff hikes. The White House posted an audio clip on its X account in which Trump said: “Prime Minister Modi is a good man. He knows I’m not happy. Making me happy is very important. If they continue doing business with Russia, we will increase tariffs very quickly.”This case reflects the ongoing conversation between the US and India in terms of trade and oil imports from Russia.
