India Fights Hard But Loses As New Zealand Clinches ODI Series

India tried hard but could not match up to New Zealand in the third One-Day International match. New Zealand won the game by 41 runs and took the series of three ODIs by 2–1.

New Zealand Sets a Strong Target

  • New Zealand, who batted first, made a total of 337 runs losing the wickets of eight batsmen. The innings was anchored by Daryl Mitchell, who made a polished century. He scored 137 runs off 131 balls and hit 15 fours and three sixes. Glenn Phillips, batting with great power, also scored a hundred—106 off 88 balls, which had nine fours and three sixes.
  • Will Young could manage only 30 runs, but Michael Bracewell was not out on 28. All the New Zealand batsmen were continuously scoring runs at a decent rate which helped them to set a difficult target.
  • Among Indian bowlers, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana were most successful as they shared six wickets between them. Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj managed to take one wicket each.

India Falls Short in the Chase

  • In their attempt to chase 338, India fell short by 42 runs as they were all out for 296 runs. The batting of Virat Kohli was a bright spot in India’s innings as he scored 124 off 108 balls with ten fours and three sixes. Nitish Reddy made a useful contribution of 53 runs, while Harshit Rana played a quick knock of 52 runs down the batting order.
  • Captain Shubman Gill made a modest contribution of 23 runs. Ravindra Jadeja scored 12, and Rohit Sharma managed to get only 11 runs. Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul were out for very low scores of three and one run respectively.
  • New Zealand’s bowlers maintained their pressure throughout the innings. Christian Clarke and Jack Foulds were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each. Lennox took two wickets, and Kyle Jamieson was credited with one.
  • India could not bridge the gap despite some strong individual performances, and thus New Zealand not only took the match but also the series.
