ICC Sets January 21 Deadline For Bangladesh T20 World Cup Decision

The International Cricket Council ICC has formally requested the Bangladesh Cricket Board BCB to come to a final decision on the matter of their wish to host the T20 World Cup 2026, which is planned to be jointly conducted by India and Sri Lanka. The BCB has been given until January 21 to respond, according to reports. However, the ICC has yet to issue the official statement. In case the verdict is unfavorable for Bangladesh, they will have to admit Scotland to the tournament and thus replace them.

Bangladesh Requests Venue Change

The tournament is already confirmed to be over and the T20 World Cup 2026 will be held in India and Sri Lanka, with the opening match on February 7. On account of the security concerns, Bangladesh wrote to the ICC stating that they wanted their matches moved to Sri Lanka. The ICC replied that they were not going to change the venues now. However, the BCB is still pushing hard on the matter. ESPN Cricinfo reports that the ICC gave January 21 as the deadline for Bangladesh to come to a decision.

Meetings Between ICC and BCB

The ICC and the BCB held two rounds of talks in Dhaka this week. Bangladesh again made the point that the whole of India might be allowed to send its players during the tournament when they are in the discussions if not only for the safety of India's expats. The ICC retorted that the schedule was already fixed and the team would be safe in India. If the deadline passes and Bangladesh has not consented to India as a venue, the ICC may offer another team a place, and Scotland will be the most likely successor given their current ranking.

Current Situation

  • Tournament Start: February 7, 2026
