Donald Trump, who was the US President at that time, expressed his linking the Greenland problem with the Nobel Peace Prize issue. He declared that he was the one who managed to stop more than eight wars however, the Nobel Peace Prize went to Norway with the exception of him. For this, he decided not to make peace in the future and instead, to do the reverse, put American interests in front.
Phone call to the Norwegian Prime Minister
- These statements were made by Trump during his telephone conversation with the Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. He raised the issue of Denmark's right over Greenland during this discussion. He claimed that the Danish government had no written documents to substantiate their claim over the island.
- Trump pointed out that Denmark mainly relied on the argument that one of its ships visited Greenland hundreds of years ago. He further claimed that many American ships had also gone to the island, thus implying that such visits do not equate to ownership.
Concerns Over Global Powers and NATO
- Trump claimed that China and Russia are really upping their game in the fight to take over Greenland. He argued that Denmark would be unable to hold the island against these two countries and that the US had already been pouring a lot of money into NATO, which, in turn, should now back American interests.
- He finished off by saying that for the security reasons of the whole world, the US must have the complete control over Greenland.
Response of the Norwegian Prime Minister
The reply of the Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre was to the effect that the Norwegian government has nothing to do with the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize as he made it clear. He stated that the selection is done by an independent Nobel Committee and not the government.
