Russian President Vladimir Putin is reacting to the comments made by US President Donald Trump about the security of Greenland. According to Trump, the island of Greenland is at risk due to the actions of Russia and China. Putin denied those allegations and insisted that Russia is not participating in the Greenland affair.
Putin’s Position on Greenland
- Putin stated that Russia has no interest in Greenland and no part in the situation. He was hopeful that the USA and Denmark would settle the issue by talking to each other. He further pointed out that Denmark regards Greenland as a part of its territory and treats it accordingly.
- Putin further mentioned that he doesn’t perceive the international rivalry over Greenland to be serious at the moment. He alluded to the United States’ history of territory acquisition. He calculated that if the US were to buy Greenland, it would have to shell out around $1 billion, which is an amount that the country can easily cover. He also reminded that Russia traded Alaska to the US for $7.2 million in 1867.
Clarification on the Peace Council Proposal
- Putin also commented on the news about a Peace Council that was suggested by President Trump for the rebuilding of Gaza. Trump had said that Putin was on board with the establishment of the council. Putin, however, made it clear that Russia has not reached a definitive conclusion.
- He said that the idea is still being evaluated and that Russia will not make a decision until it has discussed the matter with its strategic partners. He also talked about the rumors that Russia might offer $1 billion from the US frozen assets in return for a permanent seat on the council, but no official promise has been made yet.
