Visa Suspension For 75 Countries May Increase Green Card Availability

The United States government has suspended immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries. This action follows the implementation of stricter immigration policy regulations. The Green Card allocation for upcoming years will increase because of this immigration policy change.

Possible Increase in Green Cards for 2027

  • Emily Newman who practices immigration law declared that the current suspension will increase the Green Card allocation for 2027. She explained that unused family-based Green Cards may shift to the employment-based category. If this transfer happens, around 50,000 additional Green Cards could become available.
  • Under normal conditions, about 67,000 immigrant visas would have been issued to these 75 countries during the current fiscal year. The government stopped processing visa applications for these countries on January 21. The government had already issued some visas between October 1 and the beginning of the suspension. The suspension will result in multiple visa applications staying unprocessed according to expert predictions based on current numbers.

Countries Affected by the Visa Suspension

According to 2024 data, Pakistan received the highest number of family-based Green Cards, with about 15,000 approvals. Bangladesh followed with around 8,000 Green Cards. These figures highlight why the suspension could lead to a noticeable shift in visa availability for future years.
