The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to change one of its existing rules related to the broadcast of domestic cricket matches. The number of fans who watch domestic games increased after Indian cricketers started playing in these matches.
Rule Encouraging Domestic Participation
- The BCCI established a new regulation that requires Indian players with central contracts to participate in domestic matches when there are no international competitions. Several senior players have returned to domestic cricket since this rule was implemented. The public now shows greater interest in these tournaments because of this development.
- The presence of famous players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli leads to more people attending matches. Fans stand in line to see these athletes battle each other at domestic competitions.
High Fan Interest and Limited Coverage
- The Arun Jaitley Stadium hosted a Ranji Trophy match last year which attracted a large crowd who wanted to see Virat Kohli play for Delhi. Rohit Sharma played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy which resulted in many fans attending the match at the Jaipur stadium.
- Fans also wanted to watch Kohli’s matches for Delhi in Bengaluru. However, no one could enter the stadium. The matches which featured senior players did not have live broadcasts. This led to disappointment among fans, who shared their concerns on social media.
BCCI Responds to Fan Feedback
The BCCI is currently reviewing its broadcasting policy because they have received fan reactions to their existing rules. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia addressed the issue in an interview with a sports magazine.
