Trump Warns Canada Over Gordie Howe International Bridge

The United States President Donald Trump made derogatory statements about Canada while discussing economic and trade issues. He stated that Canada must return all advantages which it obtained from the United States. He claimed that if Canada failed to meet its obligations then the government would impose severe penalties.

Bridge Blockage Threatens Cross-Border Operations

Trump declared that he possessed the authority to prevent the Gordie Howe International Bridge from operating. The bridge provides a connection between Ontario which is located in Canada and Michigan which is located in the United States. He claimed that the bridge would remain blocked until the US government paid all required damages. He expressed his disapproval of the 2014 decision which permitted the bridge project to proceed after Barack Obama the former US president authorized special exemptions.

Demand for Cost Sharing or Ownership Rights

Trump proposed that Canada should contribute at least fifty percent of bridge construction expenses. He proposed that both countries should share equal ownership rights of the bridge as an alternative solution. He connected this matter to the ongoing diplomatic conflicts between the two countries.

Concerns Over Trade and Tariffs

Trump condemned Canada for its dairy product tariffs which it imposes on American exports during his remarks about trade relations. He declared that these tariffs which had remained in force for several decades created an intolerable situation. He expressed his concerns about Canada maintaining business connections with China. He declared that Canada would suffer penalties because it chose to strengthen its trading relationship with China.

Bridge Project Background

According to the project’s official website, the Gordie Howe International Bridge spans the Detroit River. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, a Canadian government-owned organization, built the bridge. The Canadian government funded the project. Authorities are preparing to open the bridge later this year.
