United States Grants India Temporary Exemption To Purchase Russian Oil During War

Temporary Exemption Announcement

  • International oil shipments face total suspension because the Middle Eastern conflict continues to disrupt operations. The United States has provided India with a temporary license which allows the country to bring in Russian oil shipments.
  • US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant shared this information on the social media platform X. He explained that Indian refineries will receive a 30-day exemption period. The current supply disruption permits them to acquire Russian oil during this period.

Oil Purchase Conditions

  • Scott Besant explained that the exemption comprises particular requirements which must be fulfilled. Indian refineries can only purchase oil which Russian ships have already lost at sea.
  • He said the arrangement will support global oil supply maintenance. He stated that the purchases will not deliver any economic benefits to Russia.

India–US Energy Cooperation

Besant described India as an important partner for the United States. He expressed hope that India will increase crude oil purchases in the future. The two nations will keep working together in the energy sector according to the statement.

India’s Recent Russian Oil Imports

India has imported significant volumes of Russian oil since 2022. The import volumes have decreased in recent times. Sanctions together with an interim trade agreement with the United States caused this reduction.

Middle East Tensions and Oil Transport Risks

  • US and Israeli military operations against Iran have created rising tensions across West Asia. The country declared that it would shut down the Strait of Hormuz in response to the situation.
  • The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important routes for global oil transportation. Its closure has disrupted fuel shipments and raised concerns about supply stability.

Current Global Oil Prices

Due to these developments, oil markets are under pressure. The price of Brent crude in the international market currently stands at around 83 dollars per barrel.
