India–US Trade Deal Awaiting Tariff Clarity

Government Position on Trade Agreement

Union Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal declared that India will proceed with the trade agreement to the United States after they receive definite tariff information. He identified tariff uncertainty as the primary factor which causes the current postponement.

Background of the Agreement

The United States and India established the first phase of their trade agreement framework in February which both countries approved. The United States government agreed to impose an 18 percent tariff on imports from India through this arrangement. The two parties intended to finalize their contractual agreement in March according to this understanding.

Legal and Policy Changes in the US

  • The United States Supreme Court nullified all tariffs which Donald Trump had enacted at a later time. This decision changed the situation.
  • After this ruling, Trump used Article 122 of the U.S. Constitution to introduce a new tariff policy. He declared that all nations would face a 10 percent tariff. These tariffs will stay in effect for 150 days which will begin on February 24.

Impact on Trade Deal Timeline

  • The modifications created confusion about the new tariff regulations. India chose to postpone the treaty signing until later.
  • Rajesh Agarwal stated that the United States is developing a system called Global Tariff Architecture. He said that India will proceed with the trade agreement after this system becomes established.

Current Status

  • The trade agreement has reached completion.
  • The two nations share agreement on most agreement conditions.
  • The two parties have reached full consensus.

The United States must establish precise tariff regulations before the final agreement can be executed.
