India Rejects Elon Musk’s Starlink ‘Stalled’ Claim: Government Says Satellite Internet Rules Are Fair
- The Indian government has denied Elon Musk’s accusation that “oligarchs” were trying to block the launch of Starlink in the country to establish a monopolistic grip on the telecom sector. The Union ministry of communications said India had a “fair and rational” regulatory system for telecom and satellite communication services.
- Elon Musk’s accusation came after the CEO of SpaceX tweeted about his frustration, saying Starlink India was facing “unfair opposition” from “certain people” who wanted to create a “monopolistic chokehold” in the telecom sector.
- “Starlink would give India a chance to offer its citizens a fast and affordable satellite broadband solution,” added the CEO. “It would provide an alternate and high-quality connectivity option to many Indians who cannot get access to traditional broadband and cellular networks.”
- However, the Indian government strongly refuted the allegations. The Union ministry of communications stated that “all satellite communication service providers are expected to adhere to the same regulations and security protocols.” They called the accusation that India was trying to create an ” unfair and discriminatory licensing regime “unfounded”.
- Three satellite communication companies are currently at a similar stage in the licensing process and are subject to security evaluations before they are assigned a spectrum.
Starlink India Launch To Begin Soon After Final Approvals
- Starlink has already acquired some essential clearances for providing satellite communication services in the country. However, the company will have to complete the final steps, including the spectrum allocation process, before it can launch its services.
- The company has also been setting up its infrastructure in India to ensure that it meets the security and data protection requirements.
- “A Starlink India spokesperson recently revealed that the company has invested in setting up its infrastructure in India. The country has over 20 gateway stations with hundreds of antennas. These stations have been set up to ensure that the data of Indian citizens is not shared outside the country,” reported IANS.
Why Starlink India Launch Is Momentous
The potential launch of Starlink India is a big deal because Starlink’s satellite broadband technology can offer high-speed internet access to inaccessible regions. Starlink’s low-Earth satellites have the potential to supplement India’s last-mile connectivity.
“This could be revolutionary for rural India, which has been a challenging market for conventional fibre-optic and cellular networks to penetrate,” stated IANS.
The competition in the satellite broadband sector is set to heat up soon as Starlink is not the only company eyeing India’s satellite broadband market. SpaceX’s satellite internet service is expected to enter a competitive arena as other firms are also vying to capture India’s large and growing digital economy. Experts project that India’s satellite broadband market will be worth around $1.9 billion by 2030, according to Deloitte.
For now, the issue seems to be strictly regulatory as Elon Musk and SpaceX have been trying to get Starlink off the ground. However, even as Musk accused “oligarchs” of wanting to sabotage Starlink’s launch in India, the government has said that “all companies must adhere to licensing and security clearances”. The next critical step for SpaceX will be completing the final steps and approvals before the launch.
