PM Modi Congratulates Shehbaz Sharif On Re-election As Pakistan's Prime Minister

Shehbaz Sharif was congratulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday for being re-elected to the position of Prime Minister of Pakistan.

"Congratulations to @CMShehbaz on being sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan," PM Modi wrote in a tweet on X, the erstwhile Twitter.

After winning the position in a parliamentary session the previous day, Shehbaz Sharif took the oath of office as Pakistan's new prime minister on Monday.

From April 2022 until August 2023, he served in the same capacity, succeeding cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, who was removed following a vote of no confidence. Nawaz Sharif, the three-time prime minister, has a younger brother named Shehbaz.

The legislative elections held last month, which his opponents believed were rigged in his advantage, have cast doubt on his appointment.

Despite not winning enough seats to form a government, Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League party, the PML-N, formed a coalition with other parties to gain a majority, which allowed him to become prime minister for a second time.

He defeated Omar Ayub, the candidate supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who received 92 votes, to win 201 votes in parliament and become prime minister.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday in Islamabad, the nation's capital. The oath of office was administered by President Arif.

In the 77-year history of Pakistan, Sharif is the 24th prime minister.
