TVS Family Dispute: Lakshmi Venu And Mallika Srinivasan Say No Economic Settlement Has Been Reached

A fresh development has occurred in the TVS family row. Lakshmi Venu and her mother, Mallika Srinivasan, have stated that there has not been any economic settlement in the family of industrialist Venu Srinivasan. They reacted to reports that the family’s economic interests and shares had been divided.

The dispute involves the allocation of the family’s economic gains and ownership in the related business houses. Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan have demanded a just and transparent economic settlement that would satisfy all the stakeholders.

What Is the TVS Family Row About?

The TVS family row broke out over the division of the family’s wealth and the ownership of businesses run by members of the Venu Srinivasan family. Disputes arose because some members felt that the settlement reached over certain business allocations did not address all economic interests.

Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan have stated that no comprehensive economic settlement has been reached. They argue that for a fair settlement, all parties must discuss and arrive at an amicable valuation of the family’s wealth.

The row erupted because the family includes some of India’s largest industrial business conglomerates, including automobile and tractor manufacturers. As such, Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan’s comments have raised questions about the allocation of economic benefits in the TVS Group of business houses.

Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan’s Statement

Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan said in their statement that the family’s global TVS businesses’ partition completed in 2020 was agreed upon by the stakeholders. However, they said that no similar due diligence, consultation, and consensus had occurred on economic benefits and ownership of the Venu Srinivasan family.

They argued that the family’s stake and wealth did not belong to one member, who could apportion it at will. According to them, the economic settlement was yet to be reached, and the family’s ownership structure required due diligence and discussion before any party can claim a larger share of the family wealth.

They said in their statement that the family needed a fair settlement and not assumptions about the division of their wealth and business ownership.

Management Positions Are Different From Ownership Structure

Some of Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan’s arguments address the assumption that management positions in the different family-owned business houses represent ownership.

They said that giving directions to family members to take up certain positions in the companies did not mean that those family members had a right to more significant shares in the companies or that the management fees paid to them were compensation for economic ownership.

They added that agreements on trademarks, brands, and non-competition clauses did not constitute economic settlement terms.

What Is the Role of TAFE in the Dispute?

Mallika Srinivasan remarked that TAFE (Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited) belonged to the Amalgamations Group business house and was a shareholder in the company. She noted that no one could conflate her ownership position in TAFE with the economic settlement issues affecting the Venu Srinivasan family.

What Does the 2024 Agreement Say?

The MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed in March 2024 has been a subject of speculation. Preliminary reports suggest that the agreement primarily addresses the usage of the TVS brand in the various business houses and the non-competition clauses.

Lakshmi Venu and Mallika Srinivasan contend that the clauses did not constitute a complete economic settlement of the family’s wealth. The disagreement, therefore, represents a dispute over the interpretation of the existing agreements and the need for a more comprehensive settlement.
