BCCI's Response To Mohsin Naqvi's Delay In Handing Over Asia Cup Trophy

Background of the Trophy Controversy

Following India's win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup final (IND vs PAK), there was a controversy surrounding the award of the trophy. President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi did not present the trophy to the Indian team. India reportedly did not accept the trophy from Naqvi and wanted it to be presented by the UAE or other ACC member officials.

Naqvi’s decision not to present the trophy led to tension between the two boards. Although he later apologized to the Indian team, the trophy remains with the ACC. Sources say Naqvi wants either the BCCI or the Indian captain to personally collect it from him — a condition the BCCI is unlikely to accept.

BCCI’s Reaction and Next Steps

Reports say that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has complained to the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the matter. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia added that the Asia Cup trophy is not the property of Mohsin Naqvi and has to be given to the legitimate winners.

In spite of this, Naqvi has stuck to his position, for which he has attracted criticism from cricket enthusiasts. His previous political comments regarding keeping sports and politics separate during India-Pakistan encounters also helped fuel controversy. PTI reported that the BCCI could take official action against him if such conduct persisted.

Cricket sources added, "Naqvi has no right to hold the trophy. As Pakistan officially hosted the Asia Cup, the trophy will have to be awarded to the winning team. If this matter continues, the BCCI would seek stern action against him."

Instructions from Naqvi and Current Situation

As per officials at the ACC, the Asia Cup trophy remains in the ACC office. Naqvi is said to have ordered officials not to shift it or pass it on without his approval. He claims that he himself will present the trophy to the Indian captain or a BCCI official.
