Team India has been handed a series of defeats of late. Earlier, the Kiwis whitewashed India at home. More recently, India lost the series 0-2 at home against the South Africans.
Team India have lost three Test series in 16 months since Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach—against New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. In the period, India played 19 Test matches, winning 7, losing 10 and drawing 2, translating to a 36.82% win percentage.
Following these results, calls have increased to remove Gambhir from his position. After the Guwahati Test, some fans at the stadium hollered slogans demanding his resignation.
Nevertheless, the BCCI has backed Gambhir. A board official said, “We will not take any hasty decisions. Team India is currently in a phase of change. With the World Cup around the corner, we will not make any decisions about Gautam Gambhir now. His contract runs till the 2027 World Cup. We will discuss with selectors and the team management and then decide. But there will be no sensational decisions about the coach.”
Further, Gautam Gambhir also reacted to questions about his future following the defeat in the Guwahati Test. He stated, “That’s for the BCCI to decide. It is Indian cricket that is important, not me. I said that when I first took over as head coach, and I say the same now. Some people forget the results achieved in England with a young team and focus only on the defeat by New Zealand. I led India to victory in the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup.”
