Siddaramaiah Resigns: DK Shivakumar Likely To Lead Karnataka Next
Siddaramaiah Announces his Resignation
- Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned from his post on Thursday after talk with the Congress High Command. He also told cabinet ministers about the decision during a breakfast meeting that was held in Bengaluru, the timing mattered it seems. Several ministers and supporters reportedly urged him to stay on, but he still chose to step down, and well that was it.
- Later the same day Siddaramaiah went to Raj Bhavan with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and several senior ministers. He submitted his resignation letter to the Governor’s Special Secretary, Prabhu Shankar. At that time Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot was away in Madhya Pradesh, and he was expected to be back in Bengaluru later that night.
- After resigning, Siddaramaiah spoke to the media and said his farewell remarks. In the evening he traveled to Delhi on a special flight, to meet senior Congress leaders. Congress state in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, plus DK Shivakumar also left for Delhi separately for more consultations.
Congress Leadership Guides the Transition
The Congress High Command took center stage in the Karnataka leadership shift. For several weeks, speculation about a possible change in leadership kept swirling within political circles, kind of on and on. After elections in five states were over, the party leadership reportedly moved fast to close the chapter.
Per party sources, Rahul Gandhi asked Siddaramaiah to resign as Chief Minister and consider a role in the Rajya Sabha. Siddaramaiah reportedly accepted the call quietly, without staging public pushback, even though he still enjoyed strong backing from many MLAs in the state.
This leadership change, it also helped lower the confusion inside the Karnataka Congress unit. Senior leaders who were seen as likely candidates stayed silent after the High Command’s reported decision.
DK Shivakumar seems to be the front runner , to take over as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar was described as the leading candidate by many insiders. During a breakfast get-together with cabinet ministers, Shivakumar showed respect to Siddaramaiah , by touching his feet and also hugging him. Several party members felt that this small act basically signaled a smoother leadership shift, in a way people often do without making a big noise.
Not long after Siddaramaiah announced his resignation , ministers and supporters began gathering at DK Shivakumar’s residence. Some reports added that Shivakumar also reached out to his family priest , to check out an auspicious time for a possible swearing-in. Political watchers feel that the Congress High Command is quietly laying groundwork for a formal announcement, once consultations wrap up with party legislators and the senior leadership in the background.
Siddaramaiah looks back on his political road
When Siddaramaiah spoke to the media, he reflected on his extended journey in the Congress party. He said the support he got from Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and the wider party leadership over the past 21 years still matters to him. He also mentioned that Congress leaders had earlier suggested he join the Rajya Sabha, but he said no to it. Siddaramaiah added that he preferred to stay active in Karnataka politics, rather than stepping away.
The outgoing Chief Minister further said he will stay rooted in public life , and continue pushing back against communal politics. He also noted that the next Chief Minister would be picked by the Congress Legislature Party, based on what the High Command decides later.
Government work and promises: what Siddaramaiah claimed
- In his farewell remarks, Siddaramaiah defended the performance of his government. He claimed that nearly 90 percent of what the Congress election manifesto promised, was actually delivered during his administration.
- He also responded to the criticism, about the government’s guarantee schemes. According to him, the worries that these schemes would somehow push Karnataka into financial difficulty, did not actually play out, not in any obvious way.
- Siddaramaiah went on to say that during his tenure Karnataka saw a Gross State Domestic Product growth rate that was higher than the country’s national GDP growth rate. He also added that he never really watered down his political values or constitutional principles while he was in office.
Internal party dynamics
This change in leadership has shown a bit of the internal political weather within the Karnataka Congress unit. A few senior leaders were being viewed as likely contenders for the Chief Minister’s post, but the reported choice from the High Command ended up reducing the space for a more open contest inside the party.
In party discussions, Siddaramaiah was said to have told members to stick together, in a coordinated way. He cautioned that if Congress keeps splitting into factions, it could basically create openings for the BJP within Karnataka’s political scene.
Now, the Congress leadership is expected to concentrate on keeping government steadiness intact, and to manage a smooth transfer of power. For now, attention is still largely on the formal selection of Karnataka’s next Chief Minister.
