BCCI Denies Food Poisoning Claims After Australia A Players Fall Ill In Kanpur

Australian Cricketers Get Sick After Second ODI

Australian A cricket team is in India for a series of matches of unofficial Tests and ODIs. After the second ODI last week, several Australian cricketers, including team captain Jack Edwards and pacer Henry Thornton, fell ill. They were admitted to Regency Hospital in Kanpur and discharged after two days. They were reported to have fallen ill because of food poisoning, for which the BCCI was criticized.

Rajiv Shukla Rejects Allegations

  • BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla denied the reports, calling them unsubstantiated. He explained that the players were given food cooked by a popular hotel in Kanpur. Shukla doubted the authenticity of the reports of food poisoning by realizing that Indian players ate the same food and did not get ill.
  • He also added that the issue might have been an infection or a reaction not related to food. Shukla also raised the concerns regarding Kanpur such as no access to large hotels and a 24-hour international airport. He added that having better facilities would have simplified things for the visiting team.

No Similar Problems During IPL

A media man asked why such things do not occur in the IPL. Shukla explained that in the IPL, franchises manage their own logistics like accommodations and catering. BCCI does not have any hold on them. Franchises select hotels and venues according to their choice, which might be the reason for the difference in experience.
