Amazon Confirms Layoffs Affecting 1,800 Engineers

Amazon confirmed a new wave of layoffs inside its corporate ranks, totaling 14,000 positions in various divisions. Included in the reductions are teams in cloud services, retail, advertising, and grocery operations.

Data filed so far in New York, California, New Jersey, and Washington shows the group includes 1,800 engineers. More than 4,700 total affected employees are reported in those states, and 40% of them are engineers, according to international media sources. Filings in other states could reveal more specifics on layoffs by department.

Amazon had also announced cuts in October, when the company said it was increasing its investment in artificial intelligence. The moves are part of an effort to satisfy current and future customers, Beth Galetti said in an email to employees. She wrote that Amazon plans to reduce the level of bureaucracy in the company, remove unnecessary layers and better utilize the resources.

These layoffs are in line with repeated messages from CEO Andy Jassy, who mentioned that Amazon is entering a period in which AI has become central to the company's strategy.
