Background of the Incident
There was a stampede at Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium while Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) celebrated its victory in IPL. The tragedy resulted in the death of 11 people and grievous injuries to many others.
FIR Filed After Tragedy
Post the tragedy, Cubbon Park police lodged an FIR. Right to Information activist Snehamai Krishna had lodged the complaint. The FIR had included RCB, DNA Entertainment Networks, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and others who were involved in staging the event.
RCB Files Petition in High Court
Responding, RCB went to the Karnataka High Court. The franchise petitioned to dismiss the case. Their lawyers contended that RCB and Royal Challengers Sports Limited (RCSL) were incorrectly mentioned in the FIR. They sought the court to quash the case.
Event Organizer Also Seeks Dismissal
DNA Entertainment Private Limited, the event management organization, submitted a separate petition too. They requested the court to cancel the case that was registered against them.
Court's Next Steps
The High Court received the petitions of both RCB and DNA Entertainment. It fixed the date of hearing as June 10.
