States Urged To Reduce Tax On Aviation Fuel

Minister Rammohan Naidu’s Appeal to States

  • The Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu requested state governments to lower their aviation fuel tax rates. The request came because current West Asian tensions created fuel supply and pricing problems for the region.
  • The minister sent his letters to multiple Chief Ministers according to reports. The letters contained his request for reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on aviation fuel which he believed would help decrease operational costs for the aviation industry.

Impact of Rising Aviation Fuel Prices

  • Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices will undergo changes on April 1. Current global conditions suggest that prices may increase further. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has already pushed fuel prices higher.
  • Airlines face direct cost increases when fuel prices rise. The increase can lead to higher airfares for passengers. The minister explained this danger to the states through his official message.

Variation in VAT Rates Across States

The minister explained that different states apply different VAT rates to aviation fuel. The following states demonstrate this point through their VAT rates:

  • Delhi: 25% VAT
  • Maharashtra: 18% VAT
  • Tamil Nadu: 29% VAT

He explained that reducing these tax rates can help control airfare increases and support airline operations.

Importance of Major Airports

  • Indira Gandhi International Airport operates as one of the world’s busiest airports. The airport served approximately 79 million passengers during the 2024–25 financial year.
  • The high passenger volume means that every airfare increase will impact multiple passengers. High-demand airports experience lower ticket prices when fuel taxes decrease.

Industry Concerns and Requests

The West Asia conflict has caused global ATF prices to rise nearly double their original value. The aviation industry has developed major worries because of this price increase.
