User Data Shared with ChatGPT Is Not Confidential
Most users, particularly the youth, are treating ChatGPT like a buddy. They pose questions, express uncertainties, and even discuss personal issues. But OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the maker of ChatGPT, issued a warning.
He stated categorically: anything relayed to ChatGPT will not be regarded as confidential. OpenAI will release user information if demanded by law. That includes chat history, even if they were deleted, under a legitimate court order.
Altman Identifies AI Privacy Limitations
Altman expressed these views in an interview in the form of a podcast while conversing with a comedian. He pointed out that users, especially young people, are using ChatGPT as a life coach or therapist. Yet, AI is not currently providing the same level of privacy protection as actual professionals like lawyers or doctors.
He cautioned: do not entirely rely on AI with personal or confidential data. In case of legal circumstances, OpenAI has to comply with court orders and can disclose user data.
Rules for Deletion of Chat and Compliance with Laws
OpenAI currently deletes deleted chats from its database within 30 days. This rule holds for every account type—Free, Plus, and Pro. Nevertheless, Altman clarified that in scenarios with court processes, chat information can be saved and disclosed appropriately.
Warning Against Over-Dependence on ChatGPT's Responses
Altman himself has cautioned people against depending too much on ChatGPT's replies. While AI has numerous advantages, sometimes it produces fictional or incorrect data to meet the queries of the users. He asked people to check facts for themselves and do not consider the chatbot an all-knowing being.
