Key Developments from the ICC Meeting in Singapore
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made significant decisions related to Test cricket and global T20 leagues. In a general meeting conducted in Singapore, under the chairmanship of ICC Chairman Jayesh, there were two crucial decisions under discussion: implementation of the two-tier Test format and the resumption of the Champions League. Representatives from the BCCI, ECB, and Cricket Australia were present. No one from the Pakistan Cricket Board was present.
Committee Setup to Oversee Test Format Change
An eight-man committee, headed by new ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta, will look into how to introduce a two-tier Test cricket format. The committee's work is to analyze both the advantages and disadvantages of the new format.
Nine teams formed the current World Test Championship. The top two teams contest the final. They are awarded a trophy and prize money if they emerge winners. The new plan had the possibility of splitting six teams into two divisions. Teams could advance or drop down between these divisions depending on their performance.
Possible Changes to Series Schedules
Currently, India, England, and Australia confront one another in two Test series every four years. With the new format pending approval, the cycle could get reduced to three years. None of the changes will come into force prior to the 2027–2029 season.
Champions League to Return in 2026
The ICC has also pledged to restore the Champions League T20, which was last seen in 2014. The final match of that season was won by Chennai Super Kings, who defeated Kolkata Knight Riders.
The rekindled tournament will include the best two teams of domestic T20 leagues organised by cricket boards in nations such as India, Australia, England, South Africa, and the West Indies. The Champions League is to make a comeback in 2026, but the venue remains uncertain.
