Amazon Eases Work Rules For Employees Affected By H-1B Visa Delays

Amazon has provided its employees in India with temporary relief while they wait for their H-1B visa appointment scheduling. Employees who were scheduled to work five days each week in Amazon's office are now allowed to work from home until March 2020.

Permission to Work from Home Temporarily

A number of Amazon's employees from the U.S. have traveled to India on business or personal travel. As these individuals are currently awaiting H-1B visa appointments, many have been unable to return to the U.S. To help these employees, Amazon offered remote working arrangements until March 2020.

This permission only applies to employees who arrived in India on or before December 13, 2019, and are awaiting rescheduled appointments for their H-1B visas. According to Amazon’s internal communications, they informed affected employees of this support via an internal memo.

Limitation During Remote Work

Amazon has placed limitations on employees who will be working from home. Employees will not be able to take part in any important decision-making while working from home, including development, testing, coding, etc. Employees are also prohibited from providing customer service or going into any Amazon offices while working remotely.

Effect on All Industries of H-1B Visa Processing Delays

Delays in H-1B visa processing have affected several major technology companies. Firms such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon are facing workforce challenges due to these delays. Reports indicate that Google has advised its employees not to travel outside the United States, as the visa re-entry process may take several months.
