Many Instagram users use several hashtags in their posts and Reels to gain more views. In most cases, users usually add trending hashtags regardless of the content. In a bid to manage this, Instagram has set a cap for users when it comes to the usage of hashtags. Now, users can only add a maximum of five hashtags in their posts and Reels.
Instagram was the first to launch hashtags in 2011. The use of hashtags enhances search functionalities when searching for topics. The Instagram community used to have the ability to place a maximum of 30 hashtags on a post. Some of these users exploited this capability by posting hashtags that were not relevant to their topics. However, this has changed to curb the abuse.
The platform further clarified that posting relevant hashtags is more fruitful instead of using all general ones. For instance, people posting pictures related to beauty need to posting only beauty-related hashtags, and not all types of hashtags like #reels or #explore.
Also, it is worth saying that according to the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, hashtags are not actually what affect visibility and reach on Instagram. It appears that this change encourages users to get involved with relevant and specific hashtags.
