Japan Launches The World's Fastest Internet At 1.02 Petabits Per Second

Japan Sets a New Internet Speed Record

Japan has announced the world’s fastest internet speed. This new technology reaches 1.02 petabits per second. At this speed, you can download all of Netflix’s content in just one second.

Developed by Japan’s NICT Team

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) created this network. It collaborated with Sumitomo Electric, the Photonic Network Laboratory, and various European groups.

How Fast Is It Compared to Other Countries?

  • It is 3.5 million times faster than the United States' average internet speed.
  • It is 16 million times faster than India's average internet speed.

Internet Performance in Real-Life Tasks

  • It can download the entire English version of Wikipedia 10,000 times within one second. The data size of Wikipedia is approximately 100 GB.
  • It can instantly download 8K resolution videos.

How the Network Works

  • The system utilizes a special fiber optic cable.
  • It contains transmitters, receivers, and 19 looping circuits.
  • Each of the circuits is 86.1 kilometers long.
  • Signals travel through these loops to transfer data.
  • The system is capable of transmitting data distances up to 1808 kilometers per second.

Who Will Use This Network?

  • The technology is not yet available for home use.
  • It will primarily be used by governments, telecommunications companies, and data center operators.
  • Experts see this system setting the direction for future 6G network and undersea cable development.
