PM Modi Nominates Sudha Murty To Rajya Sabha: Recognizing Women's Power

Author and educator Sudha Murty of India has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha, according to a statement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. He posted the information on X.

"I am thrilled that @SmtSudhaMurty Ji, the President of India, has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha." PM Modi wrote, "Sudha Ji has made enormous and inspirational contributions to a wide range of fields, including social work, philanthropy, and education."

The Prime Minister declared on the occasion of International Women's Day that Murty's membership in the Upper House is "a powerful testament to Nari Shakti (women power), exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping the nation's destiny."

Married to Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, Sudha Murty is a prolific writer in both Kannada and English, having written travelogues, technical publications, and novels. Venture investor Akshata Murty, the wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is her child.

Thanking PM Modi for the nomination, Murty—who is now outside of India—said, "It's a big Women's Day gift to me." Working for the nation comes with new responsibilities.

Sudha Murty was born in Shiggaon, Karnataka, on August 19, 1950. She started her career as an engineer and computer scientist before joining Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco) as the first female engineer employee.

Murty engages in a lot of charitable work. The Infosys Foundation, which addresses problems including poverty, healthcare, and sanitation, is chaired by the Padma Bhushan recipient. She has created school libraries, built thousands of homes in flood-affected areas, and provided funding for the installation of public restrooms through the foundation.

Given that she established Harvard University's Murty Classical Library of India, her influence goes much beyond India.
