Gill's Double Century and Long Stay at the Crease
Indian captain Shubman Gill marked a double century (269 runs) against England. He played for almost 65 overs. Gill remained on the field from day one till the second day's third session. Once England started their first innings, Gill took the field during the second over. During that session, he caught opener Ben Duckett on the bowling of Akashdeep.
Better Fielding Performance by India
India had dropped six catches in the first Test. In this match, though, they made three clean catches. During the play of the second day, Gill spoke about fielding. He said that he had not practiced slip catches for some time. His priority had been batting prior to the Test. Even then, he made a catch early in England's innings.
Gill on the Importance of Fielding
Gill recognized the impact of fielding on match results. He indicated that the team discussed it at length. He felt that dropped catches in the last match cost them dearly. In his opinion, the outcome could have been different had the fielding been improved.
Preparation and Confidence
Gill stated that he had been working on his batting ever since the IPL finished. He wished to make a good preparation for long innings in Test cricket. He also informed that practice had benefited due to the effort he had put. The catch of Duckett made him more confident, not only as a batter but also as a fielder.
India's Strong Position in Second Test
India scored a total of 587 runs in their first innings. England lost three wickets for only 77 runs in return. Two wickets were claimed by Akashdeep and one by Siraj. Gill as well as Karun Nair caught the slip catches with ease. KL Rahul caught one catch on his second try.
