Solar Rooftop Initiative Gains Momentum

The government is taking initiatives to reduce the burden of electricity costs on households. Under the centrally sponsored PM Suryagarh Yojana, it is trying to connect every home to solar-powered electricity. With more than one crore Dwakra women in the state, the government is planning to expand the program in phases by involving them.

Solar Rooftops for Dwakra Women

The first phase will have solar rooftops installed on one lakh houses of Dwakra women. The Rural Poverty Eradication Society (SREP) is educating Dwakra women on the benefits of adopting solar energy. Registration has begun for interested people, with 80,000 people giving their consent so far.

Around 700 residents in the NTR district have installed solar panels. Out of them, 400 belong to the Dwakra women. The installation process is now working in other districts as well.

Subsidy and Cost Breakdown

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana has been provided only for the household consumers. They can avail the subsidy on the solar rooftop systems of diverse capacities:

  • 3 kilowatts: Installation cost – ₹1.95 lakh; Subsidy – ₹78,000
  • 2 kilowatts: Installation cost – ₹1.40 lakh; Subsidy – ₹60,000
  • 1 kilowatt: Installation – ₹70,000; subsidy – ₹30,000.

The beneficiaries could choose a solar rooftop system keeping in view his/her domestic demand for electricity.
